Evidence based supplementation can be an important component of an integrative mental health care approach. At Innate Wisdom Psychiatry & Wellness, we combine evidence based supplementation with medications, supportive therapy, lifestyle changes, and mindfulness and somatic techniques. Supplements can often have medication interactions, so therefore it is important to discuss them with your provider, despite the fact that they are largely over the counter.
There are several supplements that are supported by randomly controlled trials, which provide the highest level of evidence. Examples include Omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil), SAMe, St. John’s Wort, Vitamin D, B vitamins such as B6, B9 (folate), and B12, N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC), lavender oil, and melatonin.
Other supplements have not been well studied with randomly controlled trials, but nonetheless, have varying levels of evidence to support their use. This includes minerals such as zinc and magnesium, enzymes such as L-theanine, as well as adaptogens, such as ashwagandha and Rhodiola.
