Ketamine Therapy Evaluations & Prescribing

At Innate Wisdom Psychiatry & Wellness, our Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, Daniel Plastino, specializes in providing comprehensive ketamine therapy evaluations and prescribing to support your mental health journey. While ketamine is a powerful tool for reducing psychiatric symptoms, it works best in conjunction with therapy, such as Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP).  We do not offer KAP in-house, but instead collaborate closely with outside therapists experienced in ketamine therapy. If you’re not already working with a therapist, our referral network can connect you with trusted providers to guide your healing journey.

What Is Ketamine Therapy?

Ketamine therapy is a cutting-edge treatment using ketamine, a safe and widely researched medication. Developed in 1962 as a pharmaceutical anesthetic, ketamine has been extensively used in the medical field. Since the early 2000s, growing research has supported its use as an off-label treatment for symptoms of various mental health conditions. Known for its rapid effects, ketamine can help reduce symptoms within hours or days, providing relief for individuals who may not respond to traditional treatments.

Conditions Treated with Ketamine Therapy

Ketamine therapy is a promising treatment option for individuals facing mental health challenges, particularly when other approaches have not been effective. Conditions it may address include:

  • Treatment-resistant depression

  • Major depressive disorder

  • Anxiety disorders

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

  • Obsessive-compulsive Disorder (OCD)

  • Bipolar disorder

  • Suicidal ideation

By increasing neuroplasticity and disrupting repetitive thought patterns, ketamine therapy can offer relief for these conditions, helping patients improve their mental health.

Benefits of Ketamine Therapy

Ketamine therapy offers unique benefits that set it apart from traditional treatments:

Rapid Relief from Symptoms

Ketamine is known for its quick effects, with many patients experiencing relief from symptoms within hours or days. This is especially valuable for individuals struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, and suicidal ideation.

Disruption of Negative Thought Patterns

Ketamine’s dissociative effects help interrupt the repetitive thought loops that accompany depression and anxiety, often allowing patients to gain new perspectives, insights, and build healthier coping mechanisms.

Enhanced Neuroplasticity

Research shows that ketamine stimulates the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), helping the brain form new, healthier neural connections. This process is hypothesized to foster improvements in emotional and cognitive flexibility and mental health over time.

Synergistic Effects with Therapy

Undergoing therapy within 24-72 hours of a ketamine session capitalizes on the neuroplasticity created by ketamine to potentially enhance and catalyze the therapeutic process. This may increase the ability of the client to foster longer-term positive growth and change.

How Ketamine Therapy Helps with Depression, Anxiety, and PTSD

Ketamine therapy has emerged as a revolutionary option for individuals struggling with severe mental health conditions:

Depression

By targeting the brain’s glutamate system, ketamine bypasses the limitations of traditional antidepressants, offering rapid relief for individuals with major depressive disorder or treatment-resistant depression.

Anxiety

Ketamine helps calm overactive thought patterns, providing a sense of relaxation and control for those with anxiety disorders.

PTSD

For individuals with PTSD, ketamine creates mental and physical conditions that often allow for processing trauma in a safer, less defensive way, enhancing therapeutic breakthroughs.

Many patients find that ketamine therapy significantly improves their quality of life after just a few sessions.

FAQs

  • KAP combines ketamine with therapy to treat depression, anxiety, PTSD, and more. Ketamine helps patients feel more open and self-aware, enhancing the therapy experience. While we don’t provide KAP, we evaluate and prescribe ketamine for use with a qualified therapist.

  • Ketamine therapy targets the brain’s glutamate system to boost neuroplasticity and disrupt negative thought patterns. Clinical trials show it effectively treats depression, PTSD, and other conditions when traditional methods don’t work.

  • Yes, ketamine therapy is safe when guided by experienced health care providers. Originally developed as an anesthetic, ketamine has a strong and proven safety record. During treatment, blood pressure may be monitored for safety.

  • Relief often begins within hours or days, but the strength and duration of the effect can vary based on individual factors, dosage, and number of sessions. Combining ketamine with therapy is thought to help create longer-lasting benefits.

  • Ketamine should always be used under clinical supervision. There are clinics that specialize in ketamine treatments for symptom relief without therapy, although we believe that ketamine therapy works best with a therapist, as it can help individuals process emotions more effectively, producing more durable changes. We prescribe ketamine for use with outside therapists, and can connect you with trusted providers if needed.

  • Although the medication itself as well as KAP is not covered, ketamine treatment evaluations at Innate Wisdom Psychiatry & Wellness are often covered by commercial insurance. We currently accept Aetna, Cigna/Allied/Evernorth, United/Optum, Anthem/BCBS, and Colorado Medicaid.

  • At Innate Wisdom Psychiatry & Wellness, we prescribe sublingual ketamine, known as troches. Ketamine is also generally available as a nasal spray (Spravato), intramuscular injection, and IV infusions. If you require one of these alternative routes of administration, we can refer you to other clinics that specialize in these treatments.
